Mr & Mrs F of Cowden own a large country estate on the Sussex Kent border. GrEnergy designed and installed the system to replace an ageing oil boiler and an unreliable combination boiler which fed a barn conversion, a large old farm house with poor insulation, an extension, a separately council tax banded cottage and a swimming pool.

The biomass boiler was installed in a garage along with a bespoke pellet store, buffer tanks and control system. Several distribution points around the estate were supplied with heat via buried, highly insulated heat main to interface with the existing heating systems.

A heat metering package has been included to monitor energy consumption and to allow the client to take advantage of the non-domestic RHI payments from the Government.

The combination of the RHI payments, lower cost in fuel and a more efficient system, will turn an expense into an income stream for the estate.

In order to maximise storage capacity, the pellet store was built from scratch to fit the garage rather than using a prefabricated commercial hopper. The resultant store holds more than 8 tonnes of pellets, reducing transportation costs and the carbon footprint of each delivery.

The system includes large capacity highly insulated buffer tanks to increase efficiency and to provide “on demand” heating.

The second phase of the project has been to upgrade the existing heating systems to improve controlability, efficiency and comfort.
